Orlando Pirates Reserves head down to the Free State where they face off against the
Marumo Gallants counterparts in the DStv Diski Challenge on Saturday. The Central University of Technology Stadium hosts this key encounter as the two sides kick off Match Day 3 of the 2024/25 campaign.
Form Guide
The search for a first win of the season continues for the young Buccaneers, who have spent
the past two weeks unmoved in seventh place on the standings. This is after registering
consecutive stalemates to start their campaign. The first of these came on the road against AmaZulu, who held them to a goalless draw in their season opener at King Zwelithini Stadium. It was followed by an entertaining 2-2 draw against Cape Town City, who netted in the second half to deny them a three-point haul.
The Bucs Reserves will now be looking to finally get over the line against Bahlabane Ba
Ntwa, who have had a tough time of it on their return to the Reserve League. Gallants are yet to register a point after two games, and find themselves near the basement of the table in 15th place. This is after falling to a 2-0 defeat against Chippa United in their first game of the season, which was followed by a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Ahead of their first outing at their new home base, they will be determined to claim the big
scalp of the Soweto Giants to get their campaign up and running.
Head-to-Head
It has been well over a year since the two clubs last crossed paths at Reserve League level,
with their most recent encounter dating back to April 2023. Spoils were shared on that occasion, with neither side managing to find the net.
That was the first goalless draw between Pirates and Gallants, whose four previous fixtures
have each produced a minimum of three goals. The Buccaneers have by far been the most dominant of the two sides, winning three consecutive games by convincing margins including a 6-0 victory at Rand Stadium in the 2021/22 season.
Gallantsā only victory in the five matches played so far came in their very first encounter when they posted a 2-1 win away from home.
