Bucs Reserves Draw Sundowns in Diski Shield

Orlando Pirates Reserves have a date with their Mamelodi Sundowns counterparts as the DStv Diski Shield marks its return, following an exhilarating edition of the DStv Diski Championship (DDC) in the recently-concluded season.

The cup competition returns after a brief absence from the South African football calendar, as the eight teams that finished in the top half of the DDC in the 2021/22 campaign square off for another piece of silverware.

The tournament kicks off with the quarter-final fixtures where the Bucs Reserves will be at home to the young Brazilians in their opening game, having finished third in the previous campaign, while their opponents enter the competition after a seventh-place finish.

The unseeded quarter-final draw – held on Wednesday afternoon – presented the promise of another thrilling contest after 10 goals were evenly shared in the two fixtures between the two sides in the league, as the Bucs claimed a 3-2 win at Lucas Moripe Stadium before the Tshwane outfit exerted revenge with an identical score line away from home months later.

This will be the first Pirates vs Sundowns meeting at this level in knockout football, and the tournament’s intricate details – including the match venues, dates and kick-off times – are set to be confirmed by the League at a later stage.
