Orlando Pirates Reserves conclude their DStv Diski Challenge campaign with a trip to the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, where they will face Polokwane City on Saturday morning.
It’s the end of what has been a thrilling season of Reserve League football which has unearthed new talent across the 16 participating teams.
Form Guide
Despite spending the bulk of the campaign in the race for the title, the Bucs Reserves can only finish in third place in the standings after seeing their form tail off at a crucial juncture.
They have since rediscovered some form in the final stretch, winning four of their last five games for a haul of 12 points with 12 goals and six conceded. However, it has been too little too late as they go into the final fixture of the season with a significant gap between themselves and the top two teams in the standings.
Pride is all that is left to play for, as they look to finish the campaign with four consecutive wins, having seen off Chippa United, Richards Bay, and Cape Town City in the fixtures preceding the finale.
Much like their next opponents, Polokwane have no realistic prospect of improving their standing on the league table following a nightmarish return to the Diski Challenge.
Sitting on the foot of the table, they are three-points below 15th place Moroka Swallows but will require an unlikely winning margin to avoid the wooden spoon.
Six of their 15 points earned throughout the campaign have come in their last five games, where they won one game and drawn three, and will look to bounce back with an upset victory over Pirates following defeat to Cape Town Spurs in their last outing.
Head-to-Head
The last fixture between the two sides finished in a straightforward victory for the Bucs Reserves, who won 3-0 at Rand Stadium through goals from Ciniso Mazibuko, Mehluleli Maphumulo, Mpumelelo Ndaba.
The result signalled an unchanged trend in the rivalry, with the Soweto Giants continuing to dominate the fixture as they did so prior to the Limpopo outfit’s three-year absence from the competition.
Pirates are currently enjoying a four-match winning streak against Polokwane, having scored nine unanswered goals in the process.
