Orlando Pirates Reserves gear up for a meeting with a familiar foe in the DStv Diski Challenge when they face off against Kaizer Chiefs in what promises to be another thrilling Soweto Derby held at Tsakane Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It’s Derby Weekend on Match Day 23 of the ongoing campaign of the Reserve League, where the two Soweto Giants lock horns in a blockbuster clash to close out the weekend’s action.
Form Guide
Each of the two Soweto Giants heads into the game with extra incentive for victory after points were dropped at both camps in their respective fixture last weekend.
The Buccaneers endured a frustrating morning at home to TS Galaxy where they played to a goalless draw to remain in third place in the standings, five points behind table-topping Mamelodi Sundowns.
That result, along with three wins and a defeat has seen them bag a total of 10 points out of the 15 on offer in their last five outings. This has resulted in them losing ground in what has been an intense race for silverware, and they will be looking to claim their first win in three games when they take to the field in Tsakane.
It will be a testing task, however, with Chiefs also looking to bounce back from the disappointment of their last outing, a one-all stalemate at home to Lamontville Golden Arrows.
The young Amakhosi have fared slightly better than their Bucs counterparts over the past five weeks, where they remain unbeaten with three wins and two draws to tally up 11 points during this period.
Having worked their way up to fourth place in the standings, just four points behind their Soweto rivals, a win on Sunday could go some way in strengthening their own standing among the contenders for the big prize at the end of the season.
Head-to-Head
The two Soweto Giants met in the opening weekend of the ongoing campaign, where Mehluleli Maphumulo’s 20th minute strike for the Buccaneers was cancelled out by Amakhosi’s Donnay Jansen 10 minutes later en route to an entertaining 1-1 draw.
It was only the second game to fail to produce a winner in the last six derbies, where a total of 16 goals have been scored.
Pirates have had the upper hand in recent encounters with their rivals, notching up three wins in the six games while only losing once and edging the goal-scoring stakes with nine goals to Chiefs’ seven.
