DDC Preview: SuperSport United

Orlando Pirates Reserves’ next DStv Diski Challenge fixture takes place in the familiar backdrop of Rand Stadium, where they welcome SuperSport United on Saturday morning.

After back-to-back fixtures on the road, the young Buccaneers are in their regular home base for the first time in 2024, gearing up for what could be a testing encounter against the defending champions.

Form Guide

Awaiting them is a United outfit that has struggled to find any sort of consistency in their title defence, managing only a handful of wins throughout the campaign to remain in the bottom half of the table in 10th place.

Matsatsansa come off a goalless draw against Polokwane City after navigating the last half hour of the encounter a man short due to the sending off of defender Neo Rapo in the second half.

They have tallied up eight points through two wins and as many draws, while only losing once in their last five matches. Despite indifferent results, the Tshwane outfit has, for the most part, been effective in front of goal during this period where they managed to score 11 times while conceding five goals.

Their Soweto counterparts have managed numbers identical to that of their opponents on each end of the field and were also kept scoreless in their most recent outing, where they lost 1-0 away to Stellenbosch. The defeat ended their three-match winning streak, restricting their points tally to just nine over their last five games.

That slip-up on the road was however not enough to drag Pirates down from the top of the table, and a win on Saturday will go a long way in keeping distance between themselves and the chasing pack.

Head-to-Head

The two Gauteng rivals will be meeting for the second time this season, a little less than two months since United netted twice in injury time to snatch all three points via a 3-1 win in Durban.

It was yet another match where victory eluded the Bucs Reserves against Matsatsansa, who have won four out of the last five encounters between these two teams.

Pirates go into the game at Rand Stadium looking for their first win over United since the 2019/20 season, when they claimed a convincing 3-0 win away from home.
